Position Title:            Assistant Director of Campus Safety and Security

Position Summary (briefly describe the general purpose of the position)

Assists the Director of Campus Safety and Environmental Health and Safety with the training and management of the Campus Safety staff and the implementation of College policies and operational directives.

 

Essential Functions (list primary functions of the position)

  • Reviews for accuracy all appropriate and required incident reports; maintains daily incident log; conducts initial and follow-up investigations; prepares written correspondence in a timely manner to be submitted to the Office of Community Standards.
  • Assures implementation and continuous compliance with College access and key control program; manages all key and locksmith requests.
  • Reviews and revises the Campus Safety Manual of Regulations; assures that all Campus Safety personnel are familiar with and abide by the content of the Manual.
  • Develop and conduct crime prevention programs and coordinate these programs with other College departments in order to provide the best possible education to the community members about how to keep themselves safe while on campus and in the community.  
  • Responsible for developing a comprehensive training program for all officers to ensure that they are properly trained and integrated into the campus culture.
  • Monitors all work schedules for regular and special assignments; approves the online payroll system entries for the Campus Safety and Security staff.
  • Coordinates response to emergencies in accordance with the National Incident Management System (NIMS) and Incident Command System (ICS).
  • Participates in the hiring of personnel; provides and coordinates staff training; works with officers to correct deficiencies; reviews the work performance of department employees in conjunction with Director.
  • Attends a variety of meetings and serves on committees, task forces, and/or related groups both internally and externally to communicate pertinent information regarding Campus Safety and Security as needed.
  • Enforces federal, state, and local laws, as well as the community standards and policies of the College.
  • Acts as a liaison for the Campus Safety and Security department with public constituencies to foster good working relationships.
  • Performs routine Campus Safety and Security duties.
  • Provides 24/7 on-call response to campus incidents on a rotational schedule.
  • Acts as the Director of Campus Safety and Security in the Director's Absence.

Minimum Qualifications (knowledge, skills, and abilities needed upon entry into the position)

Must be able to do the following:

▪       Ability to assess complex and hazardous situations and determine an appropriate course of action;

▪       Can conduct highly sensitive and confidential investigations in a timely manner;

▪       Provide effective leadership to subordinate staff;

▪       Prepare clear and concise reports;

▪       Maintain accurate and up-to-date records and appropriate documentation;

▪       Knowledge of applicable laws, best-practices in college and university security, and their application to the Eckerd College campus. Oversee the processing of information for the Clery Act, Higher Education Act, Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act and Title IX compliance.

▪       Demonstrate commitment to community policing models.

▪       Communicate effectively through oral and written mediums;

▪       Utilize computer technology for communication, data gathering, monitoring, and reporting activities;

▪       Develop and maintain good student and parent relations; work well with students, faculty, staff, and community members who have diverse academic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds;

▪       Organize and prioritize multiple tasks and complete assignments in a thorough, accurate, and timely manner to achieve expected outcomes;

▪       Possess a positive attitude and is able to adapt to quickly changing priorities.

 

Education (training / experience)

Bachelor Degree required; preference in criminal justice or related field of study.

 

Minimum of two years of supervisory experience preferred.

 

Must be 21 years of age and have a valid motor vehicle's license.

 

Must be in good physical condition, able to navigate stairs with ease, and walk and/or stand for extended periods of time.

 

Must be available for on-call duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as needed.
