Position Description
Career Advisor

Position Summary:
This full-time position guides students and alumni in developing lifelong professional skills. The Advisor will meet daily with current and former students in one-on-one appointments, facilitate events and programs, present in classes and to student groups, and develop career-related resources.

Department: Career Services / Student Affairs

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

Duties and Responsibilities:
● Assist students (regardless of major or class standing) and alumni with all aspects of their professional lives – e.g. career research, goal setting, job searching, resume and cover letter writing, networking, interviewing, economic trends, professional etiquette, graduate school, personal statements, job shadowing, on-campus employment, and internships
● Maintain an attentive and accurate appointment schedule while remaining flexible for "walk-in" advising times
● Record detailed appointment notes
● Meet individually with student to complete student employment paperwork (including I-9, W-4, direct deposit, and E-Verify)
● Promote a positive, supportive, collaborative, exciting, and inclusive office environment
● Identify, design, and promote relevant workshops and tailored career education presentations to diverse academic audiences
● Contribute to all events and outreach activities
● Ensure print and web-based resources remain up-to-date
● Develop new print and web-based resources to meet campus needs
● Complete strategic projects and research, particularly while classes are not in session
● Assist team with assessment efforts and with building Symplicity reports
● Be willing to become certified in career inventories and assessments
● Represent Career Services on interdepartmental projects and committees, including the Peace Corps Prep Program
● Participate in trainings and professional development opportunities
● Support the Career Services team as requested

● Master's degree required (student affairs, counseling, higher education, or writing preferred)
● A resume and cover letter (demonstrating mastery) are required to be considered for the position
● Experience working directly with students at a college or university as a full-time or graduate professional
● Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills with a sincere joy for constant social interaction
● Meticulous editorial skills and ability to teach students effective writing
● Appreciation and some knowledge of graphic design
● Understanding and appreciation for the value of a liberal arts education
● Knowledge of best practices related to undergraduate student career advising
● Ability to independently design and implement events
● Confident public speaker
● Proven team player
● Self-motivated, thoughtful, open-minded, compassionate, and empathetic
● A willingness to be available for occasional programming and consultations during off-hours
● Ability to manage multiple projects at a time and thrive in an exciting student-centered environment
● Web editing experience a plus
