Overview of Position:  Reporting to the Executive Director of Risk Management and Safety under the auspices of the Office of the President, the Director provides strategic leadership, supervision, and administration of the College's Campus Safety program; coordinates an integrated and appropriate response to emergencies involving life or property; represents the College to local, state, and federal authorities; and seeks to foster a strong sense of community through an emphasis on positive and proactive interactions with all members of the campus community.

Looking for:              

  • A subject-matter expert in the field of safety and security who is committed to building a strong campus safety department.
  • A relational and collaborative leader who values building and enhancing relationships with students, faculty and staff, including working closely with offices such as Residence Life, Community Standards, Title IX.
  • Experience developing and implementing long-term goals, operational policies and procedures, and training programs.
  • A leader who is comfortable with public speaking, such as delivering crime prevention programs and working closely with students, faculty and staff on training and education related to safety and emergency procedures.
  • Experience developing, planning, and directing campus safety operations.
  • Experience with effectively managing a departmental operations budget.
  • Ability to manage and lead a dynamic campus safety organization including managing compliance with Federal and State law compliance requirements.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.

 Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree; at least five (5) years of experience in campus/public safety, law enforcement, military, or security with supervisory responsibility.
  • At least 21 years of age and possess a valid motor vehicle license.
  • Must have a Florida Class D Security license or be able to obtain one within 90 days.
  • Must have completed FEMA IS 100C and IS 700B courses or be able to obtain the certifications within 90 days.
  • Must have CPR/First Aid certification or be able to obtain within 90 days.
  • Knowledge of and skills in leading an integrated campus safety and emergency response program.
  • Ability to develop and refine standard operating procedures, protocols, and response guidelines, and to develop training and key performance indicators for staff readiness and preparedness.
  • Ability to recruit, hire, train, supervise, and assess security staff.
  • Knowledge, training, and demonstrated ability in incident command.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to community policing models.
  • Knowledge of basic principles of higher education law and risk management.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of organizations and people management.
  • Ability to lead with tactfulness in working with a variety of constituencies.
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws and policies, and to analyze and prioritize multiple, complex projects.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; well-developed proficiency in data management.
  • Knowledge of the Clery Act and Title IX and ability to coordinate the institution's Clery compliance program.
  • Knowledge of and skills in threat assessment, specifically assessment in pathways to violence and mitigation strategies to prevent escalation.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

  • Frequently required to move around campus, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Frequently required to ascend and descend staircases.
  • Frequently required to work outdoors in varying temperatures and weather/atmospheric conditions including dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises.
  • Frequently required to use a computer and communicate with others in person or via email, video conferencing, chat applications, and/or telephone.
  • Frequent 24/7 on-call responsibility and after-hours work required (nights, weekends, holidays)
  • Frequently operates motor vehicles on campus, including golf carts.
  • Occasionally positions and moves self in order to respond to emergency situations.
  • Frequently moves and transports objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
