Position Summary
Assists in the education of students in Marine Science. Implements directives of faculty members and assists in instruction of multiple classes and lab sections in Marine Science. The position will work with all Marine Science faculty and staff as needs arise and will complement, not replace, undergraduate lab assistants.
Part-Time (29 hours/week) at $16/hour. The position is for one academic year beginning August 14, 2024 - May 20, 2025.
Essential Functions (other non-essential duties may be assigned)
- Maintain, prepare, clean, and store materials for lab activities in the Galbraith Marine Science Laboratory, including preparation and safe disposal of chemicals.
- Assist faculty and students in the field, including on a boat, at the beach, and in the water.
- Drive campus vans for field trip excursions supervised by faculty.
- Occasionally work with faculty members and undergraduate lab assistants to answer questions during lab, grade assignments, and facilitate make-up labs and exams.
- Deliver and retrieve materials to the Center for Academic Excellence and other locations on campus.
- Assist in disaster preparations for hurricane readiness or other adverse events that could cause long-term damage or closure to the campus.

Required Qualifications
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and faculty to facilitate coursework.
- Ability to manage work schedules effectively.
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment specific to assigned discipline.
- Knowledge of assigned discipline and ability to answer student questions related to the discipline.
- Knowledge of and skills in Microsoft Office and G-Suite software.
- Ability to work up to 29 hours per week in person on campus during normal working hours. (Hours are somewhat flexible, but depend on the needs of the discipline.)
- Valid driver's license and a safe driving record.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
- Occasionally required to lift and transport up to 25 pounds.
- Frequent periods of standing and moving around the classroom.
- Frequent use of hands and arms to reach, grasp, and use laboratory equipment.
- Must pass the Eckerd College swim test.
- Occasionally required to collect specimens in shallow water or from a vessel.
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in appropriate academic discipline. Experience in operation of power boats, or willingness to be trained, is not required but would be beneficial.
